6 key data principles of GDPR

There are 6 key data principles that should define your approach to processing personal data. Athena GDPR cloud technology helps you manage these.

Lawful, fair & transparent

Personal data processed for any purpose must be processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the personal data, using appropriate technical or organisational measures and, in this principle, “appropriate security” includes protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage.

Purpose

Personal data must be kept for no longer than is necessary for the purpose for which it is processed. Appropriate time limits must be established for the periodic review of the need for the continued storage of personal data for any purposes.

Data minimisation

Personal data must be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date. Every reasonable step must be taken to ensure that personal data that is inaccurate, having regard to the required purpose for which it is processed, is erased or rectified without delay.

Accuracy

Personal data processed for any purposes must be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose for which it is processed. Collect only applicable data that is related to the nature of the business or market you are operating within that will help or enhance your delivery of services.

Storage limitation

The purpose for which personal data is collected on any occasion must be specified, explicit and legitimate, and; Personal data collected must not be processed in a manner that is incompatible with the purpose for which it was originally collected. Collecting data and using for not the purpose it was intended for will require strict ongoing governance.

Integrity and confidentiality

You shall not collect or process data for any other reason than to be able to help the recipient and the service you are providing. The way you collect the data should be done legitimately, lawfully and fair and not in a manipulative or misleading fashion. The portal helps guide you on this process.
